5 Signs Your NZ Business Website is Losing You Customers
Most NZ business owners know their website could be better. But “could be better” and “actively costing you money” are very different things. Here are five signs your website is losing customers right now.
1. It Takes More Than 3 Seconds to Load
53% of mobile users abandon a website that takes more than 3 seconds to load. Test your site speed right now at PageSpeed Insights (free). A score below 50 on mobile means you’re losing visitors before they’ve read a single word.
Fix it: Compress all images to under 200KB, upgrade to quality NZ or AU hosting, and install a caching plugin.
2. It Doesn’t Work Properly on a Phone
Over 70% of NZ web traffic comes from mobile devices. If your website was designed 5+ years ago, it likely has small buttons, text that requires pinching, or navigation that doesn’t work on a touchscreen.
Fix it: Open your website on your phone right now and try to find your contact details and submit an enquiry. If it’s frustrating for you, your customers are leaving.
3. There’s No Clear Call to Action on the Homepage
Your homepage has one job: tell visitors what to do next. If there’s no visible button telling people to call you, book online, or get a quote, you’re leaving money on the table.
Fix it: A single, clear CTA button in your hero section, above the fold, specific, and contrasting. This single change can double enquiry rates.
4. Your Contact Form Doesn’t Work
Test your own contact form right now. Does the submission confirm on screen? Do you receive an email? Does it arrive in spam? Is your phone number clickable on mobile?
Fix it: Test every form monthly. Use WPForms or Gravity Forms on WordPress, more reliable than built-in theme forms.
5. It Doesn’t Appear in Google Search for Your Services
Search for the service you provide + your city (e.g. “plumber South Auckland”). Does your website appear on page 1? If not, customers ready to buy right now are finding your competitors instead.
Fix it: On-page SEO is the starting point, ensuring your page titles, headings, and content include the terms your customers are searching.
