Car Dealership Retargeting NZ: Win Back the Buyers Who Left

Around 95 percent of people who visit a car dealership website leave without submitting an enquiry, and most of them are gone for good unless something brings them back. Car dealership retargeting is how you bring them back – using Facebook, Instagram and Google Display ads to show a website visitor the exact vehicle they were browsing, instead of hoping they remember your dealership when they finally decide to enquire. It costs a fraction of prospecting ads and converts at a far higher rate, because every person in the audience has already shown real intent.
Why most website visitors never enquire
Buying a car is not an impulse decision. Most New Zealand buyers research for two to six weeks, comparing Trade Me listings, dealer websites and finance calculators before they contact anyone. A single visit to your website is rarely the moment they decide – it is one stop in a longer car buyer purchase funnel that includes several other dealers and several other tabs open at once.
That means the enquiry form on your vehicle detail page is only ever going to catch a small slice of genuinely interested buyers. The rest leave, and without retargeting, your dealership has no way to reappear in front of them until they happen to search again.
What car dealership retargeting actually involves
Retargeting works by placing a small tracking tag (a Meta pixel for Facebook and Instagram, a Google tag for Display) on your website. Once it is installed, every visitor who lands on a vehicle page, uses your finance calculator, or starts an enquiry gets added to an audience. You then run ads specifically to that audience as they browse elsewhere online.
This is different from a standard prospecting campaign. You are not trying to find new buyers – you are staying visible to people who already know your dealership exists and have already looked at real stock. That is why Facebook remarketing for car dealers and Google Display remarketing consistently outperform cold advertising on cost per lead.
Before you start: retargeting only works if the tracking pixel has been live long enough to build an audience. Install it now even if you are not ready to run ads – every week without it is lost data you cannot get back later.
Facebook and Instagram remarketing for car dealers
Meta’s advertising platform is the strongest retargeting channel for most NZ dealerships because it supports vehicle-specific creative at scale. Three formats do most of the work:
- VIN-specific ads: the exact vehicle a visitor viewed follows them into their Facebook and Instagram feeds, with the price and key specs pulled directly from your stock feed.
- Dynamic inventory ads: your full stock catalogue is fed into Meta, which automatically shows relevant vehicles to each person based on what they browsed, without you building a new ad for every car.
- Lookalike audiences: Meta finds new people who share characteristics with your past website visitors and buyers, useful once your retargeting pool is well established and you want to extend reach without going fully cold.
Dealers running a combined pilot of remarketing, lookalike audiences and dynamic vehicle ads have reported close to 12 percent more leads and around a fifth more visits back to vehicle detail pages, which lines up with what we see on New Zealand dealer accounts once the pixel has enough data to work with.
Google Display remarketing and dynamic vehicle ads
Google’s Display Network reaches over two million websites, including most of the high-traffic New Zealand news and lifestyle sites your buyers read daily. Dynamic remarketing works the same way as Meta’s version: your stock feed connects to Google Ads, and the specific vehicle a visitor looked at follows them as a banner ad across the network.
If your dealership is not yet running search ads, Display remarketing still works from organic and social traffic alone. That said, it compounds well alongside paid search – we cover the search side of this in our guide to Google Ads for car dealerships in NZ, and the two channels are worth running together rather than choosing one.
Building the right audience segments
A single “all website visitors” audience is a reasonable starting point, but it wastes budget by treating a casual browser the same as someone who nearly submitted an enquiry. Split your audience instead:
- All visitors (30 days): broad brand awareness, lower bid, general dealership messaging.
- Vehicle detail page viewers (30–60 days): the core retargeting group, shown the specific vehicle or model they browsed.
- Form abandoners: people who started an enquiry or finance application but did not finish – highest intent, worth the highest bid.
- Past service customers: useful for trade-in and upgrade campaigns once a customer’s car is a few years old.
Each segment gets its own creative and its own budget allocation, not a single generic ad spread across everyone.
Budget, frequency and timing
Retargeting budgets should be small relative to your total ad spend, because the audience itself is small. As a starting point, most NZ dealers see good results allocating 15–20 percent of digital ad spend to retargeting and the rest to prospecting and search. Cap frequency at three to five impressions per person per week – beyond that you are paying to annoy someone rather than persuade them.
Match your audience window to how long people actually take to decide. A 30-day window suits buyers close to a decision; a 60–90 day window keeps your dealership visible to people still early in their research, which matters given how long the New Zealand car buying cycle typically runs.
Common retargeting mistakes NZ dealers make
- No pixel installed until launch day: you lose weeks of audience-building data waiting for the campaign to start.
- Generic ads instead of vehicle-specific creative: a plain “shop now” banner converts far worse than showing the actual car someone looked at.
- No frequency cap: the same person sees the same ad a dozen times a day and starts ignoring or blocking it.
- Treating the ad as the whole job: a retargeted visitor who does re-enquire still needs a fast, human follow-up. If your team is slow to respond, the ad spend is wasted – see our breakdown of car dealership lead response time for what “fast” actually means in practice.
FAQ: car dealership retargeting in NZ
How much should a car dealership spend on retargeting?
Start with 15–20 percent of your total digital ad budget once your pixel has been live for at least two to four weeks and has enough traffic to build a usable audience.
Is retargeting different from remarketing?
Not meaningfully for a dealership’s purposes. Google tends to use “remarketing,” Meta uses “retargeting” and “remarketing” almost interchangeably, and both describe the same core idea: advertising to people who already visited your site.
Do I need Google Ads running before I start retargeting?
No. Retargeting audiences build from any website traffic, including organic search, social and referrals. Search ads help feed a larger audience faster, but they are not a prerequisite.
How long should my retargeting window be?
Match it to your typical sales cycle. Most NZ dealers see the best return keeping vehicle detail page viewers in a 30 to 60 day window, with a separate longer window of 90 days for general brand awareness.
